Who We Are

Our Mission

Rhea of Sunshine believes and maintains that all people have the right to live, work, and socialize in the community as dictated by their abilities, not their disabilities.

History of Rhea of Sunshine

Rhea of Sunshine was founded by the late Mary and Donnie Travis who recognized the need services within their community. Mary spent countless hours, dedicated to ensuring that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities would have opportunities for meaningful activities and employment within their community, as well as residential homes in which they can lead full lives with as much independence as possible. Rhea of Sunshine was officially designated as an incorporated, non-profit organization on February 13, 1986. Formal operations began in October of 1986 with an adult activity center and sheltered workshop located on Blythes Ferry Road, just off of Hwy 60 East. In November of 1996, agency operations moved to 400 Greenway Blvd. Since its opening, Rhea of Sunshine has expanded its services to provide residential habilitation and supported living services, as well as employment, community, and facility-based services. The primary source of funding for the services provided by Rhea of Sunshine comes from Medicaid through the State of Tennessee.

Thanks to Mary and Donnie Travis, Rhea of Sunshine has served as a service for provider for adults with disabilities since 1986. Furthermore, Rhea of Sunshine has provided employment with a mission and purpose for hundreds of people over the years.
